GREGORY ISAACS BIOGRAPHY AND MIXXES

Image
15 July 1950, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Reggae superstar Gregory Isaacs has seldom looked back during a career that has gone from strength to strength, and while many rock stars like to toy with an ‘outlaw’ image, Isaacs is the real thing - the ultimate rude boy reggae star - who shows no signs of slowing down. Like so many other others before him, Isaacs began his career doing the rounds of Kingston’s producers and entering various talent competitions, before recording with Rupie Edwards’ Success Records in the early 70s. He set up his own African Museum shop and label in 1973 with Errol Dunkley, in order to gain artistic and financial control of his own work. He continued to record for many other producers during the rest of the decade to finance his own label, notably Winston ‘Niney’ Holness, Gussie Clarke, Lloyd F. Campbell, Glen Brown, Alvin ‘GG’ Ranglin and Phil Pratt. His early recordings were romantic ballads crooned in the inimitable Isaacs style, cool, leisurely, and al

MADILU SYSTEM BIO AND MUSIC

Image
Jean de Dieu Makiese (May 28, 1952 – August 11, 2007), popularily known as Madilu System, was a   Soukous   singer and songwriter born in Léopoldville, Belgian Congo. He was once a member of   T.P.O.K Jazz   which dominated African popular music in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Madilu was 19 when he started his career in Kinshasa’s thriving music scene in 1969. Over the next fifteen years he sang with  Orchestre Symba ,  Papa Noel ’s  Orchestre Bambula ,  Sam Mangwana ’s  Festival des Maquisards  and his own  Orchestre Bakuba Mayopi , but his career thus far neither revealed nor promised anything out of the ordinary (in an extraordinary milieu). It was  Franco  who made a star of Madilu System (as the big man had dubbed him). "Mamou (Tu Vois)," the record that introduced the new  T.P.O.K. Jazz  singer, was a hit in 1984. Madilu followed that up with his own composition for the band, "Pesa Position." Then came "Mario" and "Reponse de Mario" in ‘85

BERES HAMMOND BIOGRAPHY AND MUSIC

Image
One of the premier lovers rock artists to emerge out of Jamaica following the genre's late-'70s/early-'80s boom,   Beres Hammond   established himself in the mid-'80s and particularly in the '90s with his soul-driven vocal style indebted to classic rocksteady and American R&B. From his early days as lead singer of   Zap Pow   to chart-topping solo hits like 1985's "What One Dance Can Do" and the massive 1990 dancehall smash "Tempting to Touch,"   Hammond   earned a reputation as romantic frontman, songwriter, and collaborator who could cross over into more socially conscious roots reggae, hip-hop fusion, and straight-ahead R&B. Released in 1996, the   Love from a Distance   album cemented his status as one of lovers rock's leading men, while later projects like 2012's Grammy-nominated   One Love, One Life   devoted equal attention to social issues and romantic odes. While his output slowed down over the next several years,

REMEMBERING LUCKY DUBE

Image
Lucky Dube  (born Ermelo Dube; pronounced "doo bay") is one of South Africa's best-selling artists and one of its most outspoken performers. Although he initially sang in the traditional Zulu mbaqanga style, his move to reggae in 1984 was sparked by his quest to express his anger against the oppression of apartheid. While The Village Voice observed, "The spirit of  Lucky Dube 's music and dance epitomizes the spirit of Black liberation", Niceup Magazine wrote, "( Dube 's) lyrics have brought an original voice to reggae by chronicling the political and spiritual struggles of his South African brethren". brethren musical talents were obvious from an early age. By the age of nine, he was conducting his school choir. After singing with school rock & roll bands, he joined his cousin,  Richard Siluma 's, mbaqanga band,  the Love Brothers . Together with the group, he recorded his first single in 1979. Inspired by thcontroversialal lyrics of
